don't be mislead by the 3PC on the box

I love norton. I buy about 10 copies a year because I have a lot of computers. I was a bit mislead by this box, 1 user 3 pcs. I thought I could install it on 3 pcs in my home and it would run for a year on each pc. well, it does not. My antivirus protection on my computers expires at different times. I just realized that when you install on the 2nd and 3rd computer, it only allows you the time left on the first computer, which to me, should be clearly advertised on the box, which I could not see it anywhere. I would have bought the other option of it, where they send you 3 discs. I did not realize it was this way.

Sluggish Resource Hog

I had switched to Norton back in 2009 when they started getting positive reviews for keeping resource usage at a minimum. I haven't had any real complaints with it until this 2012 version. Ever since installing it my computer runs sluggish & found it was Norton (ccSvcHst.exe) eating up 88% of my CPU just idling, it wasn't even scanning! Norton is quick to report other applications with resource usage but doesn't report itself. I cannot in good conscious recommend this product until they fix this issue & go back to using minimum resources as they did in 2009-2011.

Not very "Total" - it doesn't protect against malware

I've purchased and used this product for a few years without much problems until a few days ago when the "Privacy Protection" malware infected my wife's computer. I THOUGHT I had "total protection" with this product so I simply downloaded the latest updates and ran a "deep scan"...only to discover it didn't get rid of the problem.

I then went to MaAfee.com and drilled down to their technical support page. From there, I started a chat dialog with one of their technical support reps who confirmed that their software doesn't protect against this problem. Instead, the tech rep suggest I purchase their "Virus Removal Service" for $89.95/year...so much for McAfee's "total protection".

I then downloaded the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program from CNET which worked as advertised.

I don't see the point of paying for something that doesn't work as advertised when I can get a better product for free.

Great Product, But the cost adds up

I own this product, but purchased it directly from McAfee. I have used it for 2 years so far on three different computers at the same time. Also my company uses McAfee as their corporate standard for over 50,000 end users. I believe it to be solid and it has consistently worked well for me. My only problem has to do with the price... each year you have to pay again and each year the price goes up. It is almost always cheaper to re-purchase the product than to extend the license. Also, they give you 2GB of online storage for backups. My wife exceeded that and the only way to get more is to pay $59/year for unlimited storage. She only needs another couple GB of storage, and $60/year more is too much to ask for. But they have me trapped because my wife does not want more programs on her laptop and she is not technical. So I have to pay the price... per year, every year. So the bottom line is that this is a great product, but the cost will seem low at the beginning until you keep on paying more and more. Smart business model for them, bad for me. Highly recommend though.

Buyer Beware!

When I replaced tried to replace my expiring McAfee program, with another, Total Protection 2011,re-starting my computer was a necessary part of the installation. But upon restarting, my system crashed. For some reason I was unable to use System Restore and had to reformat the hard drive. I assumed (foolishly) that this was a system problem, and installed a new copy of Total Protection 2011 on my brand new system. It seemed to work, but asked me to "activate", which I did by clicking the activate button; but again and again it counted down the 15 days until it stopped working, never accepting activation. The software would never accept activation!! I tried to remove the program and "bang", system crash. Same problem. McAfee was no help, their auto find-and-fix did not solve the problem and I refused to pay US$128.00 to McAfee for help with a problem caused by McAfee. I paid a Dell technician top remove all the pieces of McAfee that were in place and could not be removed with de-install software. McAfee? NEVER AGAIN. Buyer beware!!! I returned Total Protection 2012 to Amazon.com.

works fine

I already had Norton, which was about to expire so I downloaded this (though I was worried because of all the bad reviews). I thought it didn't work at first because it still said I had 1 day remaining. I tried uninstalling, and reinstalling Norton, but the old subscription was still active (for 1 more day). Then I tried this:

All you have to do is open Norton (click on the icon) and click on Renew. Then click on I HAVE A PRODUCT KEY TO ENTER. Enter the product key and you're set for another year.

I didn't give it 5 stars just because instructions were not provided with the download. Otherwise, everything looks fine.

this is NOT a trial product!!!

Don't listen to the other guy. All you have to do is enter your product key (write it down before you install the program) and bam, you'll be protected for 366 days. Screencap is in my comment below.

Excellent program but.....

I have found the newer versions (2011-2012) of Norton Internet Security to be both highly effective at protecting my PC and absent of the cumbersome background programs that effected system performance. I am a fan and will continue to use it. The only change that is bad is that now when you add a new version it does not just add 365 days to whatever days you have remaining on your current protection so you just lose out on those days. That is not the way it has been in the past so wait until your current version is expiring to install the new code and activate it so you don't lose the last 50 days of your current protection like I did.

Much more reasonable through Amazon

I've always trusted and used Norton Internet Security programs on my computers. The last few years I just had Symantic load the new program automatically each year. But, this year when they told me my virus protection would be expiring in 30 days, and then informed me that they just wanted to let me know my credit card would automatically be charged the 59.99 to renew. I thought to myself that was awfully expensive especially being that this year had been hard on my family financially, so I started looking around. Lo and behold I found the same virus protection software through Amazon for less than half the price. Thanks Amazon you've done it again!

Still the best

I have used Norton for years, in its various personas (anti-virus, Internet security, and 360). Generally I buy whatever is available for a good price on Black Friday. This year is was the Internet Security, but only for one computer. So I had to substitute the freebee, McAfee, on my second and third computers. I wish I had not. Should have just paid for the extra support.

So for me, at least, Norton has always worked. I have never had a virus get through. The anti spam works, and my computers don't crash. McAfee, on the other hand, has not worked well and will be replaced. I highly recommend any Norton product, keeping in mind that smaller older computers should use the simplest product available (anti-virus), instead of the top product (360), so that the software doesn't make your computer lag much.

Less cluttered interface and fairly faster than 2011

Norton woke-up in 2009/10 making the interface user-friendly and its signature updates running in the background making the software less resource-hogging. It's continuing the same trend this year (NIS2012) with a little less cluttered interface - meaning most features automated for the novice user, but you have to dig in deep to make advanced changes. It works well with Windows7 as well as Win XP if you care (I don't have Vista - so cannot comment about that).

1. Installation: As in the recent versions of NIS, installation was a snap. It took under 2 minutes, but needed a restart. If you have existing license for NIS, download the update from support -> check for new version menu item from within NIS. You can update the license number from the disk later when your license is about to expire. In previous version(s), NIS overwrote existing license period if you upgraded from disk. I havent checked it on this version (I still have about 90 days left, too risky!!).

2. Interface: The main interface is less cluttered, but a new addition is a big status window (floating gadget) on the upper right corner of your screen with large buttons for different menus. Most buttons on these menus are for other Norton products unrelated to NIS (annoying). For example button for on-line back-up (costs extra!) or mobile protection for android (free), parental control (free) etc. I havent found an easy way to get rid of this yet! (Alright! It's easy. There is a close button next to it and if you close it, it does not reappear after a restart).

3. Setting up: Most of the settings are done by default and should be fine for the average user. For example how often to scan your computer, what time of the day, which files to allow to connect to the internet etc. If you need advanced settings, most of those are just a couple of clicks away and mostly easy to find. There are some menu items that could have been done better. If you had existing trusted network information from previous NIS, those are retained which is good.

4. Security: As in previous versions, NIS was good at detecting most of the commonly bothering cookies and adware. Everytime you download a file, it is checked for viruses and if it is from a trusted website and there is a pop-up saying it is clean. Similarly, like previous versions, Norton safe search marks results from google searches as safe or not. you can check website security by looking for norton trusted symbol e.g. bank sites or amazon.com - that way you wont enter your password in a phising site.

5. What's new? Like mentioned above the annoying floating gadget is new. The primary interface is less cluttered but at the same time advanced settings are easily accessible from different menus. The new version does appear to be a little faster than 2011. might be significant on older systems.

Overall, very good protection with minimal resource usage.

NIS 2011 Was Better

I bought this because the 1 year sub was up on 2011 and I was able to get 2012 for cheaper than sub for another year for the 2011 version.

Install was easy but I don't see much of a difference in what 2012 offers than what 2011 had. There are a few things I don't like about 2012:

1. It scans my system a lot slower.

2. No option to totally turn off autoupdate like you could in 2011. Can turn off auto but pulse updates turn on then and gets greyed out so there is no way to have them both be off at the same time. I like to update it manually liked I did 2011 but can't now.

3. No way to turn off quick scans like you could in 2011.

4. Seems to load slower at start up when set to "aggresive" but 2011 started right away.

5. When you click on settings or any of the options the software takes longer to respond. At first I didn't think I had clicked right and tried again but it took a few seconds to respond. Future tries have the same results.

6. Constantly bugs you to sign into your norton account if you click on update and then the page has script errors and no way to turn this off. Only option is to sign or click remind me later which takes several tries and the first click on remind me later doesn't make it go away and instead just refreshes the page again.

Other than these issues it works but wish I had stayed with 2011.

Quality Internet Security Suite for 2012

This version appears to build upon the 2011 version. A simplified user interface masks an upgraded version of the 2011 interface. The user can now select to either have the simpler interface appear when opening up the Norton product, allowing for easy access to launch scans or for checking on/running live updates or otherwise one can set the product to regularly open up to the more advanced interface, displaying a revival of CPU and Norton usage meters, along with a trust level meter displaying the amount of files currently trusted by Norton that are on the computer after a reputation scan has been executed and also in conjunction to what setting one has selected beforehand for computer scanning purposes. The product appears to function well, with no real noticable slowdown in performance from the previous version thus continuing on with Norton's lighter footprint design and improvements which were introduced with the 2009 versions of Nortons. Quick scans are now automatically launched by the suite during new update periods and run daily on their own. The quickscans supposedly have now been improved upon to create a more thorough scan than on previous versions, while also offering improved upon rootkit scanning. Also, Norton's Sonar has been improved, along with the Insight Database, allowing NIS 2012 to provide a solid multiple layered level of protection/defense to the user. In addition, the firewall remains excellent, along with the anti-spam. With all of this said, it is important to realize and understand that no security suite will ever provide 100% protection to the user. Using common sense while online is of paramount importance. However, if one desires to have among the best protection currently available in a security suite for 2012, then in my opinion NIS 2012 is an excellent choice. It was again chosen as Editor's Choice by PC magazine out of the new 2012 internet security suites, and in my opinion it was chosen that for good reason.

NIS 2011 Was Better
